Unity No. 2: Double (Note to Self) explores small disruptions in everyday perception. A doubling within a newspaper photograph introduces an unsettling detail into an otherwise familiar scene, questioning the shared assumptions through which ordinary life becomes recognisable.
The Unity series examines the distortions and asymmetries that can interrupt our sense of an ordered, coherent world. Its starting point is the everyday: familiar images and situations whose apparent stability depends partly on habit and collective agreement.
Here, the newspaper provides a framework of ordinary events, photographs and captions. Within this familiar arrangement, the doubled figure draws attention to a detail that resists easy explanation. Recognition gives way to a second look, making the act of looking part of the work.
The disturbance remains small, allowing familiarity and uncertainty to coexist. Through this ambiguity, the work considers how readily we accept an image as evidence, and how a slight discrepancy can unsettle the reality it appears to describe.
