THOUGHTS
2010 · Demonstration signs, C-print and video
Thoughts is an ongoing installation based on replicas of protest signs made by students at the University of California, Berkeley, members of the Free Speech Movement and other organisations campaigning for social change during the late 1950s and 1960s.
The work gives renewed material presence to the spontaneous, often short-lived language of protest. Reconstructed slogans carry traces of the demands, hopes and circumstances that originally brought them into public space.
Presented through photography, video and installation, Thoughts explores how these statements can be preserved and reactivated across time. Their return opens questions about the relationship between political expression and collective memory, and how words addressed to a particular moment acquire new meanings beyond it.
