HIERARCHICAL
2014 · Two-channel HD video with sound, three C-prints and three framed letters
Guided by a travel diary from the 1970s and John Ruskin’s ideas about restoration and decay, Hierarchical connects human memory loss with the contemporary presentation of ancient monuments in Rome.
The work explores the distance between a monument’s visible form and the histories accumulated within it. Personal recollection and architectural memory become intertwined, raising questions about what survives through preservation, what becomes obscured, and how the traces of time shape our understanding of the past.
