CROSSINGS
2013 · Print on semi-transparent paper; glass
Crossings takes its starting point in an account of a pact made between two Englishmen in Rome in 1900. Convinced that the soul would survive death, they agreed that whoever died first would attempt to communicate with the other. The survivor would wait in the same room, notebook in hand, ready to receive the message. When his friend died, however, grief prevented him from entering.
In 2013, Silas Emmery entered the room with a pen and notebook, taking up the unrealised act of waiting.
The image shows the address where the pact was made. Through the return to this place and the re-enactment of an unfulfilled promise, Crossings brings personal loss, architectural memory and the expectation of communication beyond death into relation.
